During the plague of 1575–1577, which killed around a third of the population, the Senate promised to build a church if the city was saved. Andrea Palladio designed the Church of the Redentore on the Giudecca, and since 1577 Venetians have walked across the water every year to give thanks, then celebrated until dawn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRedentore is a compact Venetian mirror, \u003cstrong\u003e103 cm tall\u003c\/strong\u003e, with panels \u003cstrong\u003eengraved by hand\u003c\/strong\u003e with flowers and scrolls. A double frame of \u003cstrong\u003eamber and rose twisted cords\u003c\/strong\u003e draws its geometry, and large \u003cstrong\u003eruby-red glass flowers\u003c\/strong\u003e with pointed leaves open at every corner and crest.
