Murano Glass Bowl — Cascata
Cascata is a waterfall, and the design earns the name: the millefiori run down the length of the bowl rather than sitting evenly across it, gathering where the glass deepens. Millefiori — a thousand flowers — are canes built up in layers so a flower runs the whole length of the rod, then sliced across so every slice is a bloom.
The bowl is formed in transparent or opaque coloured glass and the murrine are laid in while it is still soft, so they sink slightly and the surface stays smooth over them. Run a finger across it: you feel glass, not mosaic. That is the difference between murrine set into a piece and murrine stuck onto one.
Seven colours and three lengths, from 21 cm to 42 cm. The largest is a serving piece as much as an object — it will hold fruit, and it is the only piece here that improves with something in it.
