DESCRIPTION

Murano Glass Centerpiece — Fondamenta

A fondamenta is the stone edge a canal is held by — the line where the city stops and the water starts. Venice is a place made entirely of that edge, repeated a few thousand times, and its whole character comes from the contrast between the two sides of it.

The piece is built on the same idea: a field of one colour, ringed by a rim of the opposite one — black glass with a Venetian red rim, or Venetian red with a black rim. The field is filled with millefiori murrine, canes of glass whose flower pattern runs the full length before being sliced across, so every slice shows the same flower without being the same flower.

The two colourways are worth thinking about separately. Black with a red edge is the more formal; red with a black edge is warmer and reads bigger in a room.
