Dogana — Murano Glass Contemporary Mirror
At the tip of Venice, where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca, stands the Punta della Dogana: the Republic's old customs house, where every ship arriving in the city was inspected and taxed. In 2009 it reopened as a museum of contemporary art — a seventeenth-century building, stripped back to its brick and beams, holding work made today. Dogana is a mirror with that double nature: the oldest craft in Venice, in a resolutely modern shape.
Murano has never been a museum. Alongside the flowers and scrolls of tradition, its furnaces work with designers on pieces that owe nothing to the past but the technique: blocks of colour, clean geometry, glass treated as sculpture. Dogana belongs to the "Color" series, conceived exactly for this — a frame where the Venetian gesture survives and the ornament becomes graphic.
It is a wide, horizontal mirror, 154 cm across. The frame is built from panels of Murano glass in ivory and amber, worked and engraved by hand with a fine lattice that catches the light, and it opens at the corners into flared, wing-like points. Sculptural glass leaves and flowers in amber gather at the top and at each corner — the one quotation from the Venetian tradition, magnified and reinterpreted. The mirror plate is left perfectly clean, so the frame reads as the artwork.
Its scale suits a sofa wall, a wide console, a bedroom facing the bed or a reception area. And because it belongs to the "Color" series, both the colours and the dimensions can be changed: the same design can be made in your palette, from bold and saturated to all-white.
Dogana is handmade in Murano by Fratelli Tosi, a family glassworks founded in the early 1900s by Romano Tosi and known worldwide for its Venetian mirrors and Murano glass furniture.
