Murano Glass Centerpiece — San Donato
Murano has its own basilica, Santi Maria e Donato, and on its floor is a mosaic laid in the twelfth century — peacocks, eagles, knots of stone worked into a dark ground that has shifted underfoot for eight hundred years and never come apart. The glassmakers of this island have walked over it their whole lives.
Black glass carries four inserts in gold, red, blue and green, with Venetian murrine — canes of coloured glass sliced across to reveal the pattern running through them — and gold leaf worked in between. Four marks on a dark field, which is exactly how the basilica floor is composed.
This is the quietest piece in the collection and the one that suits a serious room best: a dark wood table, a stone mantel, anywhere the four colours can do their work without competition.
