Murano Glass Centerpiece — Cubo

Filigrana is the technique Venice guarded most jealously. Fine canes — white, or coloured, sometimes twisted into spirals — are laid side by side, fused, and then worked so the lines survive into the finished piece. It was perfected on Murano in the sixteenth century, and the Republic treated the method as a state secret.

At the centre of this piece the filigrana sits as a panel of fine parallel lines, framed by a field of one colour and a rim of the other. It is the most disciplined design in the collection — everything else here is mosaic and scatter; this is ruled.

The geometry makes it the easiest to live with. It suits a modern room better than the mosaic designs, and it is the one that looks deliberate rather than decorative on a desk.
