The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is a room Tintoretto spent twenty-three years filling with paintings, and he did it almost without colour — everything is brown, black, a white that is really grey, and the figures arrive out of the dark rather than sitting in front of it. It is the most restrained thing in Venice and the most dramatic.

This is the collection's monochrome. Smoked grey glass sits at the centre on silver leaf, bordered by a mosaic of ivory, grey and black, with murrine in black and white alone. No gold, no colour — the interest is all in the tones and in what the silver does underneath them.

The one to choose for a room that is already doing something: a strong painting, a coloured wall, a table that is dressed. It holds its own without arguing.
