Cesendello — Murano Glass Mirror Sconce
Long before electricity, Venetian palaces were lit by the cesendello: a slender glass lamp, blown on Murano, hung from a chain with a small flame inside. Its light was warm, unsteady and never enough, so the Venetians learned a trick that is still the finest thing a room can do — they set a mirror behind the flame, and doubled it. Cesendello is that idea made into a single object: a mirror and a light in one.
Pieces like this were the great luxury of the eighteenth century. A mirrored sconce multiplied every candle, so a few flames could fill a drawing room, and the engraved glass scattered the light into hundreds of small reflections. It is the same principle behind the great mirrored halls of Europe: the light was expensive, the mirror made it go further.
Cesendello stands 109 cm tall. Its oval frame is built from mirror panels engraved by hand with bouquets and leafy sprays, outlined by twisted Murano glass rods and crowned, at the top and at the base, by star-shaped glass flowers with gold inclusions. From the centre spring the curved glass arms that carry the candle lights, each one blown and shaped by hand, with a spray of glass leaves rising behind them like a fountain.
Lit, it turns a wall into a warm, glittering surface; unlit, it stays a Venetian mirror. Hang it in a pair beside a fireplace or a console, along a corridor, or at the sides of a large mirror in a dining room: this is the classic Venetian way to light a room without a ceiling fixture.
Cesendello is handmade in Murano by Fratelli Tosi, a family glassworks founded in the early 1900s by Romano Tosi and known worldwide for its Venetian mirrors and Murano glass furniture.
