Murano Glass Centerpiece — Vetrai

The Fondamenta dei Vetrai is the street of the glassmakers — the canal-side walk on Murano where the furnaces stand one after another, doors open in summer, heat coming out of them into the air. Everything on this island is made within a few hundred metres of that water, and has been since 1291.

A single colour is laid at the centre over silver leaf, edged with a mosaic of multicoloured glass. The effect is deliberate: one clear field, then a band of everything — which is what the fondamenta looks like when the furnace doors are open and the whole street is colour.

In Venetian red, green and blue. This is the most sociable piece here — it does well on a table that gets used, with things put down on it.
