Mondo Novo — Murano Glass TV Mirror
Long before television, Venetians already paid to watch pictures come to life. In the eighteenth century, showmen set up a painted wooden box called the mondo novo — the "new world" — at fairs and in the squares: for a coin you put your eye to the lens and saw distant cities, battles and wonders appear inside. Giandomenico Tiepolo painted the crowd queuing in front of one in 1791, and his fresco now hangs at Ca' Rezzonico.
Mondo Novo keeps the surprise. It is a classic Venetian mirror, framed in crystal panels engraved by hand with sprays of flowers, gold-toned twisted rods and amber-gold glass leaves and rosettes at the corners and at the middle of each side. In the lower part of the plate hides a 19-inch screen: switched off, you see only the mirror; switched on, a small window of picture opens in the glass, while the rest stays a mirror you can use.
At 120 × 90 cm it has the size of an ordinary wall mirror, so it belongs where a large screen would be too much: a bedroom, a study, a dressing room or a hotel room. Each piece is made to order, so the screen, the size of the frame and the colours can be changed: ask us and we will prepare a bespoke quote.
