Squero — Murano Glass TV Mirror
In a squero, a Venetian boatyard, a gondola is still built by hand from eight kinds of wood and then lacquered black. Tradition says the colour goes back to the sumptuary laws of the sixteenth century, which stopped the Venetians from competing in luxury on the water: the boat had to be black, and only its details were allowed to shine — brass sea horses, carved and gilded ornaments. The squero of San Trovaso, with its wooden house in mountain style, still works on its canal today.
Squero has the same palette. Its panels are black Murano glass engraved by hand with arabesques and rosettes, framed by gold-toned twisted rods; along the scalloped crest and the lower edge run garlands of amber-gold glass leaves and flowers, and the top rises around an engraved black oval medallion. It measures 145 × 150 cm around a 40-inch screen: switched off, it is a Venetian mirror in black and gold; switched on, the picture appears through the glass.
It belongs above a fireplace, in a living room, in a master bedroom or in a hotel suite. Each piece is made to order around the screen, so the frame can be built for a different size, and the colours can be changed: ask us and we will prepare a bespoke quote.
Squero is handmade in Murano by Fratelli Tosi, a family glassworks founded in the early 1900s by Romano Tosi and known worldwide for its Venetian mirrors and Murano glass furniture.
