Infinito — Murano Glass Sculpture
A single ribbon of molten glass, drawn into a knot that has no beginning and no end. Two arcs rise, cross, curl back through themselves and come to rest on a disc of clear crystal — a form that changes completely depending on where you stand. Turn it once and it is a loop; turn it again and it is a flame.
Infinito is made with sommerso, the Murano technique in which a core of coloured glass is submerged inside successive layers of transparent crystal. The colour appears to float within the piece rather than sit on its surface: it pools and darkens where the glass is thick, and thins almost to nothing where the ribbon tapers to its point. Nothing is painted, nothing applied — it is glass inside glass.
The form is pulled and turned by hand at the mouth of the furnace, in seconds, while the glass is still incandescent. No mould exists for a shape like this, and none could: the curve is judged entirely by the master's eye. It is why no two knots ever close in quite the same way.
