Colonna — Murano Glass Candleholder
Colonna — "column" — takes the oldest gesture in Western architecture and lifts it, in glass, to hold a single flame. Standing sixty-seven centimetres tall, it is a classical fluted column in miniature: a slender ribbed shaft rising from a wide, calm base to a shallow cup, drawn with the same sense of proportion that has shaped Venetian palazzi for five hundred years. Lit, it turns a dinner into an occasion; unlit, it is pure sculpture.
Every Colonna is mouth-blown and shaped entirely by hand on the island of Murano by masters who have inherited seven centuries of Venetian glassmaking. The fluting that runs the length of the shaft is worked into the glass while it is still molten, so the ribs catch and multiply the candlelight, and the flame seems to travel down the column as it flickers. There is no mould for proportions like these — each is judged by the maestro's eye, so no two are exactly alike.
Choose clear Crystal, which all but disappears and lets the flame float in mid-air, or dramatic Black, which reads like polished obsidian against the light. Beautiful alone on a console or mantel; unforgettable as a pair — one crystal, one black — down the centre of a table.
