Arcadia — Murano Glass Antique-Style Mirror
Every summer the nobles of eighteenth-century Venice left the city for the villas of the Brenta, the river road to Padua lined with country houses, gardens and orchards. They called that season the villeggiatura, and they filled those rooms with an imagined countryside of nymphs, shepherds and gods — the Arcadia that Venetian painters, Tiepolo above all, spread across their ceilings. This mirror belongs to that world: its glass is engraved with figures out of a pastoral daydream.
Arcadia is a faithful reproduction of an eighteenth-century Venetian mirror, made today by hand with the techniques of the original: the panels are engraved one by one, the corner rosettes and the twisted rods are shaped in the flame, and the central plate is finished antiqued, with the misty, clouded patina that time gives to the silvering of an old mirror. It is the look of a palace mirror, newly made — none of the fragility of an antique, all of its atmosphere.
The frame, 92 cm tall and 73 cm wide, is built from smoky blue mirror panels engraved by hand: reclining figures in the upper and lower bands, standing figures down the sides, small medallions at the corners, and foliage scrolling between them. Twisted glass rods outline the whole frame, and glass rosettes mark every joint. Its generous, almost square proportions suit a wall above a console, a fireplace, a dresser or a desk, in a room where a piece is meant to look as if it had always been there.
Arcadia is handmade in Murano by Fratelli Tosi, a family glassworks founded in the early 1900s by Romano Tosi and known worldwide for its Venetian mirrors and Murano glass furniture.
