Polar Bear — Murano Glass Sculpture

Clear glass has never had a better subject than a polar bear. There is no colour to hide behind and nothing to decorate — just the bare material doing what it does best, which is to look exactly like ice. Held up to the light the whole animal disappears into brightness; set on a dark surface it turns solid again.

Twelve or fourteen centimetres, sculpted free-hand at the furnace from a single gather. Small enough for a bedside table, striking enough that people always ask about it.
