Sfumati — "the shaded ones" — are the tallest, most sculptural vases in our collection: slender columns of Murano glass rising sixty centimetres, their colour dissolving from light to dark down the length of the piece like dusk settling over the lagoon. But the colour is only half the story. Run a hand down the surface and you feel it: a skin of fine vertical striations, carved entirely by hand, that catch the light like bark, like rain on a window, like the grain of weathered wood.

Each vase is born of two Murano arts. First the sfumato, in the heat of the furnace, where one colour is dissolved into another inside the glass itself — no seam, no line, judged only by the maestro's eye. Then the cold work of the moleria, where the whole surface is incised line by line against the wheel — the technique Venetians call battuto, "beaten" — until the glass loses its shine and takes on the soft, textured warmth of something grown rather than made. Shaped without moulds by masters who have inherited seven centuries of Venetian glassmaking, no two pieces carry the same grain.

Choose from three silhouettes — a slim column, a gently waisted form, and an asymmetric flare — in three shaded tones: Topaz, warm Tobacco, and cool Steel. One alone commands a console, a hallway or an empty corner; a trio together, in mixed colours and shapes, becomes a small forest of Venetian light.
