Murano Glass Centerpiece — Gonfalone
A gonfalone is a standard — the banner carried at the front of a procession, weighted so it hangs rather than flies. Venice made hundreds of them, one for every guild and confraternity, and the glassmakers had their own.
The whole surface is a mosaic of avventurina — streaked glass carrying suspended copper crystals, invented on Murano and still the most difficult colour to make well, because the copper has to crystallise as the glass cools and not before. Tilt the piece and the crystals catch, all at once, and then go out.
It needs a light source to be understood — near a window, or under a lamp. In a dark corner it reads as brown; in the light it is full of sparks.
