Atena — Murano Glass Centerpiece
Named for the goddess of wisdom and the arts, Atena takes the most poetic silhouette in all of Murano — the fazzoletto, the handkerchief — and casts it in gold-touched glass. A wide, generous bowl whose rim falls in soft, asymmetric folds, as if a square of silk had been dropped and frozen the instant it settled: no two folds alike, no two pieces the same.
The handkerchief form is Murano royalty — a shape the island has drawn like fabric from molten glass since the mid-twentieth century, and one of the hardest to master, because it is shaped by gravity and breath alone, never a mould. Atena adds a second, older magic: gold leaf, sheets of pure 24-carat gold laid into the glass while it is still incandescent, so a warm shimmer seems to rise from within the colour.
Its tone is the softest in the collection: a smoky amethyst that shifts from rose to violet as the light moves across the folds, veiled throughout in gold. Mouth-blown and draped entirely by hand by masters who have inherited seven centuries of Venetian glassmaking, Atena is as much light as it is glass.
At sixty-five centimetres across, it is a centrepiece in the truest sense — the still, luminous heart of a dining table or a console, whether left empty as pure sculpture or filled with fruit, blooms or floating candlelight.
