Ormesino was a silk — light, faintly shot, woven in Venice and traded across Europe when the Republic's wealth still came off ships. It was the fabric you used when you wanted the light to do the work rather than the dye: turn it, and the colour changes.
A mosaic of transparent and opaque glass with both gold leaf and silver leaf worked in, finished with a band of black glass. The two leaves behave differently under light — gold warms, silver cools — so the surface shifts as you walk past it, which is exactly what the silk did.
