Murano Glass Centerpiece — Frari

The Frari is the great brick church on the other side of the Grand Canal — dim, enormous, almost severe. You walk into the dark of it and then Titian's altarpiece is there at the far end, burning. Venetians have been staging that moment for five centuries: keep everything low, then give the eye one place to go.

The ground is black glass. The centre carries a decoration built in shades of a single colour — grey, red, blue or green, depending on the piece — with Venetian murrine and gold leaf set into it. Nothing is painted on. Every element is laid into the glass while it is hot, so the colour has depth and moves as you move.

Four colourways, each behaving differently in a room: the snow grey is architectural, the Venetian red is warm, the blue is cool and evening-ish, the green is the quietest of them.
