Mirror Sconces
A Venetian mirror sconce joins two Venetian inventions in a single piece: an engraved mirror back and Murano glass arms carrying the lights. The mirror was placed behind the flame for a practical reason — to double the light of candles in the palaces of Venice — and the effect is just as magical with modern bulbs, as reflections dance across the engraved glass.
Mirror sconces are made to order in Murano and look their best in pairs: on either side of a mirror, a bed, a fireplace or a doorway. Light and reflection together
A mirror sconce puts a small engraved Venetian mirror behind the light, so the flame or the bulb is doubled and thrown back into the room. It is the oldest lighting trick in Venice, invented when candles were expensive and rooms were dark. Ours carry the same hand-blown flowers and leaves as the chandeliers, at a scale that suits a corridor, a staircase or the sides of a larger mirror.
Where to hang them
In pairs, flanking a mirror or a bed, they do more for a room than any single fixture. Mount the centre at about 160–170 cm — roughly eye level — and leave 2–2.5 m between sconces along a wall. Colours can be matched to a chandelier or a mirror through our bespoke service. Electrical models should be installed by an electrician.
Frequently asked questions
Are they electric or for candles?
Both exist. Each product page states which, along with the dimensions; if you need an electric version of a candle model, ask us and we will check with the workshop.
Can they match a mirror or a chandelier?
Yes. Because everything is blown to order, the workshop can keep sconces, mirror and chandelier in one colour run. Tell us what you already have and we will prepare a proposal.
How do I clean them?
Dust the glass with a soft dry brush; for the mirrored plate, a cloth barely damp with water. Never spray liquid — it runs behind the silvering — and never use ammonia or solvents.
