Choosing Murano Glass Candleholders
Glass made for flame
Candlelight is what Murano glass was designed for long before electricity: the colour deepens, the sommerso layers separate and gold leaf catches every flicker. Each holder is blown and shaped by hand, then annealed slowly so the glass can take the warmth of a flame without stress. Pair them with a centrepiece for a table that works by candlelight alone.
Using them safely
Use a candle that fits the socket without forcing, stand the holder on a level, heat-resistant surface, and never leave a flame unattended or let a candle burn down into the glass. Let wax cool completely before removing it: warm water softens it, while a freezer can crack the piece. Never pour cold water on warm glass, or the reverse — thermal shock, not fragility, is what breaks Murano glass.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove candle wax?
Let it set, lift what comes away by hand, then soften the rest with lukewarm — not hot — water and wipe with a soft cloth. Do not scrape with metal and do not put the piece in the freezer.
Can I use tealights or LED candles instead?
Yes, as long as they sit properly in the holder. LED candles give the same movement of light with no wax and no heat, which is the safest option if the holder stands near curtains or on a shelf.
Will the heat damage the glass?
No. The glass was worked at over 1,000 °C and annealed slowly; a candle flame is nothing by comparison. What it dislikes is a sudden change of temperature — cold water on a warm holder, for instance.
