Decorating with Murano Glass

Murano glass furnishes a room with light: a hand-blown chandelier gives the space its centre, sconces and lamps set the mood, vases and mirrors finish it. Scroll to watch an empty room come to life, then find the sizes, heights and pieces for every room.

One chandelier, and the room comes alive

The chandelier sets the light and the tone; a vase and a lamp in blown glass complete the room.

How to decorate each room with Murano glass

Murano glass looks its best in layers: one centrepiece that shapes the room, lower lights for atmosphere, and a few objects that catch the light. The workshop can even keep one colour of glass across several pieces.

Living room

Start with the chandelier: it is the first thing you see as you walk in, and it sets the tone for the room. Beside the sofa, a table lamp or a floor lamp brings light where people actually sit; on a low table, a vase or a bowl in blown glass catches the daylight.

Dining room and kitchen

Above the table, a chandelier half to two thirds as wide as the tabletop, hung 75–90 cm (30–35 in) above it. On the table, hand-blown goblets and a low centrepiece, under 35 cm (14 in), so conversation can cross the table.

Bedroom

A pair of wall sconces either side of the bed, centred at 160–170 cm (63–67 in), gives a soft light that never glares. A Venetian mirror facing the window doubles the daylight; on the bedside table, a table lamp with its shade at shoulder height when you sit up.

Hallway and entrance

This is where Venetian mirrors belong: above a console, about two thirds as wide as it. Along a corridor, sconces every 2–2.5 m (6.5–8 ft); on the console, a tall vase or a sculpture greets whoever comes in.

Useful measurements

The numbers worth remembering

Chandelier diameter
Add the room’s length and width in metres and read the total in centimetres: a 5 × 4 m room (16 × 13 ft) takes about 90 cm (35 in).
Chandelier over a table
Half to two thirds of the tabletop’s width, with the lowest glass 75–90 cm (30–35 in) above it.
Clearance where people walk
At least 2.1 m (7 ft) of free height under the chandelier.
Wall sconces
Centre at 160–170 cm (63–67 in) from the floor, 2–2.5 m (6.5–8 ft) apart.
Mirrors
Centre of the glass at 155–160 cm (61–63 in); above furniture, about two thirds of its width.
Vases and centrepieces on a table
Under 35 cm (14 in), so guests can see each other.
Bulbs
Warm-white LED, around 2700 K: little heat, kinder to the glass.

A month ago I was in Venice and couldn't help noticing the incredible glass figures in every corner of the city. But I was afraid of choosing something that wasn't authentic, so I didn't feel able to buy one at the time. Days later, back home, I kept thinking about it and happened to come across this elegant, professional business. After so many days of searching and hesitating, I finally chose my piece, and I couldn't be happier. From the website, which is incredibly well designed, to unwrapping the very parcel that held my piece, it was a truly exceptional experience. The detail, the care and the love devoted to this Venetian art, and the professionalism this business offers, are seen in very few places. I don't usually write reviews, but I feel this shop has great potential to grow and deserves to be recognised all over the world.

I've recently bought an artistic glass vase; the customer service was very fast and prepared, the expedition was really fast and the item came directly at my house. The product was even better than the photos in the ad. I'm really satisfied with my experience, I highly recommend this company.

Questions

Decorating with Murano glass: your questions

How do I choose the right size of Murano chandelier?

Add the room’s length and width in metres: that number, in centimetres, is the ideal diameter. A 5 × 4 m room (16 × 13 ft) calls for a chandelier of about 90 cm (35 in). Above a table, the tabletop decides: choose a chandelier half to two thirds as wide.

How high should a chandelier hang?

Above a table, keep the lowest glass 75–90 cm (30–35 in) from the tabletop. Where people walk, leave at least 2.1 m (7 ft) of clear height beneath it. With low ceilings, a floral or contemporary model, more compact in height, works best.

Does Murano glass suit a modern home?

Yes. Clear crystal or single-colour pieces with clean lines sit well in contemporary interiors, while Rezzonico and floral chandeliers give character to classic rooms. The rule is one lead piece per room and a few glass accents around it.

Can I have a piece in my room’s size and colour?

Very often, yes: a chandelier’s colour, number of lights and proportions can be adapted, and the same glass colour can run across chandelier, sconces and lamps. Tell us about your room on the custom commissions page.

How does a chandelier arrive, and how is it installed?

It is made to order: allow about three weeks before it ships. It travels in a made-to-measure crate, insured and tracked to your door, and shipping is free within the European Union. It should be installed by an electrician; our installation guide explains what the work involves.

Can I order from outside Europe?

Yes. Our fittings are wired to European standards: if you order from outside Europe, tell us your country before buying and we will check the sockets and voltage together. The shipping cost appears at checkout, before you pay.
