Mirrors

For more than five centuries, Murano glass mirrors have been among the most coveted objects Venice ever produced. In the 1500s the island’s mirror-makers perfected crystal-clear glass with a brilliant reflective backing, and the Republic guarded their secrets so jealously that glassmakers were forbidden to leave the lagoon. Today the same tradition lives on in mirrors whose frames are made of glass itself — bevelled, engraved by hand and assembled piece by piece.

The collection spans every style: ornate Venetian mirrors with glass flowers and gold leaf, faithful antique reproductions, bevelled French-style mirrors, bold contemporary designs, TV mirrors and mirror sconces. Most pieces are made to order in your size and colours — tell us about your wall through our custom service — and every mirror is carefully packed and travels fully insured to your door.

Buying guide

How a Venetian Mirror Is Made

Engraved plate, blown frame

A Venetian mirror is two crafts in one object. The plate is engraved by hand on a wheel — the molatura — cutting bevels, leaves and scrolls into the glass itself, so the decoration is part of the mirror and not printed on it. Around it goes a frame of individually blown elements: flowers, ribbons, rosettes and a cimasa, the crest at the top, each pinned in place by hand. Our techniques page explains the processes behind them.

Size, height and light

Above a console or a fireplace, a mirror looks right at roughly two thirds of the width beneath it. On an empty wall, hang the centre of the glass around 155–160 cm from the floor, at eye level for most people. The oldest Venetian trick still works best: place the mirror opposite a window and it gives the room a second one. Styles run from classic Venetian to contemporary, French and antiqued.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order a different size or colour?

Yes — every mirror is made to order, so dimensions, colour and decoration can be adapted to your wall. Tell us the measurements through our custom commissions page; the estimated production time is shown on each product page.

How is it hung on the wall?

The mirror arrives with its fixings and a wooden backing already prepared. Because of the weight and the value, we recommend having it fitted by a professional with anchors suited to your wall.

How is it packed and shipped?

In a custom wooden crate, with the blown elements protected separately, fully insured and tracked to the door. Every mirror travels with a certificate of authenticity you can verify online.
