Giardino Segreto — Murano Glass Venetian Mirror

Walk through Venice and you see stone, water and brick. Yet behind the high walls of its palaces and convents the city hides secret gardens: courtyards of roses and wisteria, vines on pergolas, fig trees leaning over canals, glimpsed only through a half-open gate. Giardino Segreto is a mirror that opens that gate, a garland of rose glass flowers and green leaves around a pool of light.

For Venetians a garden was the rarest luxury of all, because every square metre of the city had been won from the lagoon. Flowers therefore moved inside, into fabrics, frescoes, stucco and glass, and the flower became the great motif of Murano. Engraved or sculpted in glass, it blooms all year round.

Giardino Segreto has an oval central mirror framed by a ring of panels engraved by hand with climbing leaves, and an outer frame of scalloped, rounded lobes. Hand-shaped glass flowers in rose and leaves in green are tucked between the sections like blooms on a trellis. Its generous, almost round proportions, 100 by 85 cm, make it lovely above a sideboard, in a bedroom or anywhere a room needs softness.

Giardino Segreto is handmade in Murano by Fratelli Tosi, a family glassworks founded in the early 1900s by Romano Tosi and known worldwide for its Venetian mirrors and Murano glass furniture.
