Venetian Mirrors
A Venetian mirror is instantly recognisable: instead of a wooden or gilded frame, the mirror is surrounded by more mirror. Bevelled glass panels are engraved by hand with flowers, leaves and scrolls on a grinding wheel, then joined by twisted rods of Murano glass and crowned with a cresting — sometimes enriched with glass flowers in amethyst, ruby or aquamarine, or with gold leaf. The style flourished in the palaces of eighteenth-century Venice, where mirrors multiplied the light of candles and chandeliers across the room.

Choosing a Classic Venetian Mirror
The style Venice invented
The classic Venetian mirror was born when the Republic held the secret of flat glass: engraved plates surrounded by mirrored bands, hand-blown flowers at the joints and a crest — the cimasa — crowning the top. Nothing is moulded; the leaves and rosettes are shaped one at a time over the flame and fixed by hand, which is why no two frames are identical even in the same model.
Where it belongs
These mirrors were made for entrances and reception rooms, and they still do their best work there: above a console at the front door, over a fireplace, or facing a window so the light comes back into the room. Keep the wall around them fairly plain — an engraved Venetian frame is already the pattern in the room. Simpler shapes are in contemporary mirrors.
Frequently asked questions
Is the glass really engraved by hand?
Yes. The decoration is cut into the plate on a grinding wheel, one line at a time. Run a finger over it and you feel the bevels — printed or laser-etched imitations are flat to the touch.
Can I choose the colour of the glass?
Yes, within what the furnace can blow: crystal, amber, gold, blue, red and more. Mirrors are made to order, so tell us the room and we will confirm colours, size and timing.
Are the flowers fragile?
They are solid glass and firmly fixed, but they are the parts that project, so handle the mirror by the frame edges and have it hung by a professional. Dust with a soft dry brush rather than a cloth that can catch.
