MURANO GLASS · CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

Christmas Ornaments

Murano's Christmas ornaments are shaped using the same lampworking technique used for glass flowers and beads — a rod of glass is softened over an open flame and shaped by hand in minutes, rather than blown into a mould. It is a tradition of small-scale glasswork on the island stretching back centuries, long before Christmas trees themselves became a Venetian custom.

Because each ornament is hand-shaped rather than mass-moulded, no two are ever quite identical — a small imperfection is a sign of genuine handwork. They travel well when packed in their original box, but our care guide has tips on safe storage between seasons, and our gift guide covers pairing ornaments with other pieces for a complete gift.

Murano Glass Christmas Ornaments

Blown, not moulded

Industrial baubles are pressed from thin glass in a mould. These are blown and shaped one at a time on Murano, with murrine, gold leaf or applied colour worked into the body while it is hot — the same techniques used for the pieces in the rest of the shop, at ornament scale. They weigh more than a supermarket bauble, and they are meant to come out of the box every December for decades.

Hanging and storing

Choose a branch strong enough for real glass and hang the heavier pieces low and towards the trunk, where they are protected. Keep them away from lights that get hot. In January, wrap each one separately in tissue and store the box somewhere dry and stable — not a loft that freezes and bakes in turn. A dusty ornament needs no more than a soft dry brush.

Frequently asked questions

Are they more fragile than normal baubles?

They are thicker and heavier, so they are less easily crushed — but they are solid glass, so a fall onto a hard floor will break them. Hang them on strong branches and out of reach of pets and small children.

Can they be personalised?

Some models can be made in chosen colours if ordered in time; engraving is not part of the process. Ask us early through contact — December is the one month the furnaces cannot improvise.

Will they arrive in time for Christmas?

Pieces in stock ship immediately, and each product page shows the estimated delivery window for your country. For December deliveries, order with a margin: courier networks slow down in the last two weeks.
