Venetian Mirror Wall Clock — Marangona
Before clocks hung in houses, Venice was told the time by a bell. The largest bell of St Mark's campanile was called the Marangona, after the marangoni, the carpenters of the Arsenale: it rang at dawn to open the working day and again at dusk to close it, and the whole city moved to its rhythm.

Marangona — Venetian Mirror Wall Clock
Before clocks hung in houses, Venice was told the time by a bell. The largest bell of St Mark's campanile was called the Marangona, after the marangoni, the carpenters of the Arsenale: it rang at dawn to open the working day and again at dusk to close it, and the whole city moved to its rhythm. This clock carries that name, and the same task — to give a room its hours.
Venice has always made time beautiful. In 1499 the Republic unveiled the Torre dell'Orologio on Piazza San Marco: a blue and gold dial marking the hours, the phases of the moon and the signs of the zodiac, crowned by two bronze figures that strike the bell on the hour. From that taste for time as spectacle come the grand Venetian clocks of the following centuries, and this one belongs to their family.
Marangona is 94 cm tall and entirely clad in mirror engraved by hand: wheat-ear sprays and scrolling foliage run down the sides, and the bevelled panels are silvered in the traditional way so the light comes back soft and deep. A pointed crest rises above the case, the Roman-numeral dial sits on a golden ground framed with fine ornament, and below it the pendulum swings against a black panel, a quiet movement that the whole room notices. The mouldings are in wood gilded with gold leaf, applied by hand.
It suits an entrance hall, a dining room, a study or a stair landing — anywhere a wall needs one vertical, luminous piece. Together with a Venetian mirror on a facing wall it doubles the light twice over.
