Buying guide

Choosing a Murano Glass Centrepiece

The piece a table is built around

The Venetian centrepiece — the alzata — was designed to be seen from every seat: a wide, shallow bowl raised on a stem, blown in one piece and shaped with tools while glowing. Ours range from fluted crystal forms to sculptural pieces in sommerso colour. The techniques behind each shape are explained in our guide to Murano techniques.

Size and setting

Keep a centrepiece below about 35 cm tall so conversation carries across the table, and allow roughly a third of the table width so place settings still breathe. Empty, it reads as sculpture; filled with fruit, it becomes the reason the table looks finished. On a console or a sideboard, height matters less and you can go bolder. Matching bowls and candleholders sit in the same collection.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put fruit directly in it?

Yes — that is what it is for. Glass holds no flavour and does not react with food. Rinse with lukewarm water and dry by hand afterwards; avoid the dishwasher entirely.

How do I clean the stem and the folds?

Lukewarm water, a drop of neutral soap and a soft brush; hold the piece by the body, never by the stem alone. Full instructions are in the care guide.

Is it made to order?

The pieces you see are ready to ship; other colours and sizes can usually be blown for you through our custom commissions service, in weeks rather than days.
