Buying guide

Contemporary Murano Vases

Sculptural, not traditional

Contemporary Murano vases keep the ancient techniques and abandon the classical silhouette: asymmetric mouths, thick sculptural bases, colour used in blocks rather than bands. Many are shaped with tools while the glass is still soft rather than blown into a symmetrical form, which is why the profile changes as you walk around the piece. Compare them with modern vases and the wider vase collection.

Using them

A sculptural vase can stand empty — many are designed to. If you do use flowers, a few stems suit these shapes better than a full bouquet; the glass is the arrangement. Put the piece where light can pass through it, keep it below about 35 cm on a dining table, and wash by hand in lukewarm water. The full routine is in our care guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put water in it?

Yes, unless the description says the piece is purely sculptural. Use lukewarm water, never hot, and empty and dry the vase before storing it.

Why is the mouth uneven?

Because it was shaped by hand rather than pressed into a mould. The asymmetry is the design, and it is also how you tell hand work from an industrial copy — see our guide to recognising authentic Murano glass.

Can I order one in another colour?

Often yes. Each piece is blown individually, so colour and height can usually be adapted through our custom commissions service.
