MURANO GLASS · JEWELRY & WEARABLE ART

Jewelry

Glass jewelry is one of Murano's oldest exports — Venetian glass beads (conterie and lampworked murrine) travelled the trade routes to Africa and the Americas for over four centuries, prized as currency as much as ornament. Every necklace, bracelet and pair of earrings we sell continues that tradition, shaped bead by bead over an open flame — read more in our guide to millefiori glass.

Because colour in Murano glass is never arbitrary — certain hues have carried meaning on the island for centuries — our guide to Murano glass colours can help you choose a piece with real significance, whether for yourself or as a gift. Glass jewelry is more resilient than it looks, but our care guide covers safe cleaning and storage all the same.

How to Choose Murano Glass Jewelry

Beads shaped at the flame

Venetian glass jewelry is built one bead at a time. The glassmaker melts a rod over an open flame — the technique is called lume — and winds the molten glass onto a steel mandrel, adding colour, gold leaf or slices of millefiori cane while it is still soft. Because every bead is wound by hand, no two are the same size or pattern: the small differences you can see between beads are the signature of real work, not a defect. Our techniques page explains each decoration you will find in these pieces.

Necklaces, bracelets, earrings

Start from how the piece will be worn. Necklaces carry the largest beads and read from across a room; bracelets sit closest to the eye, so colour and detail matter most; earrings are the lightest way to wear Murano glass, on nickel-free findings that are gentle on the skin. Every listing gives the real measurements, so check them before ordering rather than judging scale from the photograph.

Wearing it and keeping it right

Glass is not damaged by water, but the metal parts and the threading are happier dry: put jewelry on last, after perfume and hairspray, and take it off before swimming or showering. Store each piece flat and separate, so beads do not knock against one another. To clean, wipe with a soft cloth barely damp with water — never ultrasonic cleaners, dishwashers or alcohol. Our care guide covers storage and cleaning in more detail.

Venetian glass or Murano glass?

The two names describe the same tradition. Venice has blown glass since the Middle Ages, but in 1291 the Republic moved every furnace onto the island of Murano, away from a city built largely of wood. From that point on, authentic Venetian glass has been Murano glass.

So a Venetian glass bracelet and a Murano glass bracelet are the same object under two names: the first describes the city and the style, the second the island where the beads were actually worked. You will also see jewellery and jewelry — British and American spelling of one word. What matters is neither spelling nor name but where the glass was made, which is why every piece here is sent with a certificate stating its origin.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell real Murano glass jewelry from a copy?

Look for asymmetry: hand-wound beads vary slightly in shape, and often hold tiny internal bubbles. Perfectly identical beads at a very low price are usually machine-made imports sold in Venice as souvenirs. Every piece we ship carries a certificate of authenticity you can verify online, and our guide to recognising authentic Murano glass lists the seven signs to check.

Is Murano glass jewellery fragile?

Less than people expect. These are solid glass beads, not hollow ornaments, and they are worn daily in Venice. They will chip if struck against stone or tile, so take the piece off before sport or heavy work and store it in its box rather than loose in a bag.

Are the earrings suitable for sensitive ears?

Yes — the earrings are mounted on nickel-free findings. The glass itself is inert and does not react with skin, which is why glass jewelry often suits people who cannot wear common metal alloys.

Does it arrive ready to give as a gift?

Yes. Every order ships in protective luxury packaging with its certificate of authenticity, so it can be handed over as it arrives. If you are choosing for someone else, our gift ideas page groups pieces by occasion and budget.

Is Venetian glass the same as Murano glass?

In practice, yes. Venice moved its furnaces to the island of Murano in 1291, so glass genuinely made in the Venetian tradition since then is Murano glass. "Venetian glass" is used more loosely in English and is sometimes applied to pieces made elsewhere in the style, which is exactly why the island of origin — and a certificate — is worth checking before you buy.
