AUTHENTIC VENETIAN MURANO GLASS

Necklaces

Murano glass necklaces — wearable art from the heart of Murano, Venice. From chokers that frame the throat to long strands made for layering, each is strung with hand-lampworked glass beads in jewel colours that catch the light against the skin.

Every bead is shaped at the flame by Murano master glassmakers, so no two necklaces are ever the same. Each arrives with a certificate of authenticity and fully insured worldwide shipping.

Choosing a Murano Glass Necklace

What is on the strand

A Venetian necklace is a small anthology of techniques. Sommerso submerges one colour inside another so the bead glows from within; filigrana twists fine white or coloured threads through clear glass; murrina slices a patterned cane and fuses the flowers onto the surface. Each bead is wound by hand over the flame, so colour and size vary slightly along the strand — read more in our guide to Murano techniques.

Length changes everything

A short strand sits at the base of the throat and frames an open neckline; a long strand falls over a jumper or a dress and can be doubled. Larger beads want space around them, so they suit simple, plain clothing; small beads work under a collar. Every listing gives the exact length and bead size, and the photographs are taken on black so the real colour of the glass is what you see.

How to keep it

Store a necklace lying flat rather than hanging: over years, hanging puts constant tension on the thread. Keep it apart from other jewelry so beads are not scratched by metal, and put it on after perfume. Clean with a soft cloth, slightly damp, and dry it before putting it away — our care guide has the full routine. Matching earrings and bracelets are part of the same collection.

Venetian necklaces and Murano necklaces

Both names point to the same lagoon. Glassmaking is Venetian; since 1291 it has been done on Murano, where the Republic moved the furnaces to keep fire away from the city. A Venetian necklace in glass is therefore a Murano one.

Length changes the piece more than any other choice. A 42–45 cm strand sits at the collarbone and suits an open neckline; 50–60 cm falls onto the chest and carries a larger central bead; longer ropes can be doubled. Because each bead is drawn by hand, two necklaces of the same design are never quite identical — which is the point of them.

Frequently asked questions

Which length should I choose?

As a rule: around 40–45 cm sits on the collarbone and suits open necklines; 50–60 cm falls just below and works over almost anything; longer strands are made to be layered or doubled. The exact length of each necklace is on its product page.

Are the beads heavy to wear?

Glass is denser than plastic, so a Murano necklace has a real, reassuring weight — that is part of how you recognise it. Larger sphere necklaces are noticeable but comfortable; if weight matters to you, choose a strand of smaller beads.

What if a thread ever breaks?

Write to us. Restringing is straightforward work for a jeweller, and we can tell you how the piece was assembled so nothing is lost. Get in touch with a photograph and we will help.

Does each necklace come with a certificate?

Yes — every piece ships with a certificate of authenticity that can be verified online, together with insured delivery and protective packaging suitable for giving.

Are Venetian necklaces and Murano glass necklaces the same thing?

Yes, when the glass is genuine. "Venetian" names the city and the tradition, "Murano" the island where the glass is actually worked and the term that guarantees origin. A necklace sold as Venetian but made outside the lagoon is neither — ask where it was made and for a certificate.
