Murano Glass Centerpiece — Striato
Avventurina is the most difficult glass Murano makes, and it was found by accident — the name comes from a ventura, by chance. Copper is dissolved into the melt and then the cooling has to be slowed for days, so the copper crystallises inside the glass instead of staying invisible in it. Get it wrong and you have brown glass. Get it right and it is full of gold.
Here the avventurina is worked as a streaked decoration at the centre of the piece, held between a field of one colour and a rim of the other — black with a Venetian red edge, or Venetian red with a black one. The streaks are directional, so the crystals light up in sequence as you move rather than all at once.
This is a piece to place, not to put down. Somewhere it will be walked past: the whole effect is in the movement.
