The Lovers — Murano Glass Sculpture
Two figures drawn upward into a single line, arms and bodies folded into one another until it is no longer clear where one ends. There is no face, no detail, nothing to date it — which is exactly why this piece has been given at Venetian weddings and anniversaries for decades. It is love with the specifics removed, so anyone can put their own into it.
Thirty-eight centimetres, drawn out by hand from a single mass of molten glass and set on a base of stone or clear crystal. The version with coloured laces carries fine threads of colour worked through the bodies while the glass was still liquid — a technique that has to be right first time, because there is no correcting it.
