Ametista — Murano Glass Venetian Mirror

Amethyst was the stone of bishops and emperors, the violet worn by those who held power with composure. Ametista is a mirror in that noble colour: a long, horizontal frame of amethyst Murano glass, engraved and crowned with bronze-gold leaves, made to rule over a room.

The secret of this violet lies in the glassmaker's chemistry. For centuries Murano used manganese as "glassmaker's soap": in tiny amounts it cleans the green tint from glass and makes it clear; in larger amounts it turns the glass a deep, luminous purple. The same mineral, in different measure, gives both perfect transparency and this regal colour.

Ametista is 190 cm wide and 120 cm tall, a rare horizontal Venetian mirror. Its rounded, elongated frame is made of amethyst glass engraved by hand with fine scrolling branches, edged with gold and crystal cords, and punctuated by clusters of bronze-gold glass leaves and flowers. A shaped crest rises at the centre of the top rail. Its proportions make it ideal above a sofa, a long sideboard, a bed headboard or a fireplace, where a vertical mirror would feel too small.

Ametista is handmade in Murano by Fratelli Tosi, a family glassworks founded in the early 1900s by Romano Tosi and known worldwide for its Venetian mirrors and Murano glass furniture.
