DESCRIPTION

Canaletto — Murano Glass Venetian Mirror

In the eighteenth century young English aristocrats crossed Europe on the Grand Tour, and no stop was more dazzling than Venice. They took home a memory, and often a painting by Canaletto: views of the Grand Canal under skies of clear, intense blue. Many of those canvases passed through the British consul Joseph Smith, whose collection ended up with King George III. Canaletto the mirror is a souvenir of that blue.

Canaletto painted Venice with almost mathematical precision, line by line, window by window. The engravers of Murano work in the same spirit: every leaf and petal cut into the glass is drawn freehand, with a sure eye and a steady hand, until the panel becomes a drawing made of light.

This mirror, 130 cm tall, joins clear crystal to deep cobalt blue. Twisted cobalt cords trace a double frame around the central mirror, crystal panels are engraved by hand with garlands, and an elegant engraved urn overflowing with flowers fills the crest. Cobalt glass flowers and star-shaped leaves complete the design. Blue and silver make it perfect for a classic dining room, a study or a bedroom in cool tones.

Canaletto is handmade in Murano by Fratelli Tosi, a family glassworks founded in the early 1900s by Romano Tosi and known worldwide for its Venetian mirrors and Murano glass furniture.
