Bucintoro — Murano Glass Venetian Mirror
Once a year, on Ascension Day, the Doge of Venice boarded the Bucintoro, a state galley so covered in gilded carvings that it blazed on the water, and was rowed out to the Adriatic. There he threw a gold ring into the waves and married the sea in the name of the Republic. Bucintoro the mirror carries that ceremony's gold: amber-gold glass flowers on a frame of shining engraved crystal.
The last Bucintoro, launched in 1729, was the most splendid of all. When Napoleon's troops took Venice they burned it in 1798 to recover the gold leaf from its carvings, and only fragments survive today. What could not be burned was the taste it embodied, the Venetian certainty that splendour belongs in everyday life, and that same certainty lives on in the island's mirrors.
Standing 140 cm tall, Bucintoro frames an octagonal central mirror with panels engraved by hand with stars and leaves. Its crest is crowned by three engraved round medallions, like portholes of light, and amber-gold twisted cords, glass leaves and flowers run all around the outline. It has the presence of a ceremonial piece and suits a grand entrance, a dining room or the wall above a fireplace.
Bucintoro is handmade in Murano by Fratelli Tosi, a family glassworks founded in the early 1900s by Romano Tosi and known worldwide for its Venetian mirrors and Murano glass furniture.
