For more than a thousand years Venice was ruled by a doge, and beside him stood the dogaressa, the first lady of the Serenissima, welcomed into the Doge's Palace with processions of silk, music and gold. Dogaressa is a mirror made in her image: a tall, regal silhouette of hand-engraved Murano glass, crowned with an arched crest and garlanded with amber-gold glass flowers, as composed and luminous as a Venetian noblewoman dressed for the ball.

The story of the Venetian mirror begins on Murano. In 1507 two glassmakers of the island, the brothers Andrea and Domenico dal Gallo, obtained from the Republic the exclusive right to make mirrors of crystal glass, clearer and brighter than the polished metal Europe had known until then. Within a century Venetian mirrors were coveted by every court on the continent and guarded like a state secret: in 1665 France had to lure Murano mirror-makers to Paris to learn the craft, and less than twenty years later that knowledge lined the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.

Dogaressa carries that heritage whole. Standing 160 cm tall, its scalloped frame is composed of many separate mirror sections, each engraved by hand with sprays of flowers and leaves, edged with twisted glass cords in amber-gold and joined into one flowing outline. At the top, the crest holds an engraved basket of flowers; all around it, glass flowers and leaves shaped by hand catch the light like jewels. By day the mirror glows softly; by lamplight or candlelight the engravings come alive and the whole frame seems to shimmer.

Hang it above a console in an entrance hall, over a fireplace or in a dressing room and it becomes part of the architecture: at this scale a Venetian mirror is not an accessory but the centrepiece of the room, doubling its light and its depth.
