Galaverna — Murano Glass Venetian Mirror
On the coldest winter mornings in northern Italy, fog freezes on every branch and blade of grass, covering the world in white feathers of ice. Italians call it galaverna. This mirror has that frozen, silent beauty: no colour at all, only crystal and engraving, like frost drawn on glass by a patient hand.
Pure clear glass was Murano's greatest invention. Around the middle of the fifteenth century the glassmaker Angelo Barovier perfected cristallo, a glass so colourless and transparent that it seemed to be made of rock crystal. It changed the history of glass in Europe, and without it the Venetian mirror, with its brilliant, faithful reflection, could never have existed.
Galaverna stands 145 cm tall. Its rectangular central mirror is surrounded by two rows of panels engraved by hand with leaves, stars and garlands, divided by twisted crystal cords. The pointed crest carries an engraved bouquet framed by glass leaves, and crystal glass flowers accompany the outline down to the scalloped base. Colourless and timeless, it fits every palette, from a classic interior to a minimal white room.
Galaverna is handmade in Murano by Fratelli Tosi, a family glassworks founded in the early 1900s by Romano Tosi and known worldwide for its Venetian mirrors and Murano glass furniture.
