Laguna — Murano Glass Venetian Mirror

Venice does not stand on land. It rises from a lagoon of shallow water, sandbanks and salt marsh, a mirror of its own that shifts from pearl grey at dawn to turquoise at noon and pale blue at dusk. Laguna brings those colours indoors: a tall Venetian mirror scattered with sky-blue and turquoise glass flowers, as if the light on the water had been gathered and set into glass.

The lagoon is also where Murano glass was born. In 1291 the Republic ordered the glass furnaces out of the city, to protect its wooden houses from fire, and the glassmakers settled on the island of Murano. Seven centuries later the furnaces are still there, a short boat ride across the same water whose colours inspired this mirror.

Standing 145 cm tall, Laguna has a frame of bevelled mirror panels engraved by hand with trellis patterns, sprays of flowers and scrolling leaves, outlined by twisted crystal cords. Around it, dozens of hand-shaped glass flowers in soft sky blue alternate with deeper turquoise stars and leaves, rising at the crest in three larger blossoms. It is a joyful, luminous piece that brightens a dining room, an entrance or a light-filled living room.

Laguna is handmade in Murano by Fratelli Tosi, a family glassworks founded in the early 1900s by Romano Tosi and known worldwide for its Venetian mirrors and Murano glass furniture.
