DESCRIPTION

Primavera — Murano Glass Venetian Mirror

In a Venetian orphanage on the Riva degli Schiavoni, a red-haired priest taught music to a celebrated orchestra of young women. His name was Antonio Vivaldi, and in 1725 he published four violin concertos that would become the most famous music ever written in Venice: The Four Seasons. Primavera, "Spring", is a mirror that plays its first movement, all birdsong, fresh breezes and blossom.

Vivaldi's Venice was the Venice of the Baroque, when curves, scrolls and flowers invaded palaces, churches and theatres. Murano answered with mirrors that were no longer simple frames but sculptures of glass, twisting and flowering around the light. Primavera belongs to that exuberant family.

At 170 cm tall, it is a statement piece. The frame is shaped from sweeping scrolls of pale azure glass, curling at the crest into a double wave, and edged with fine glass beads. Hand-shaped rose glass flowers bloom among clusters of amber and peach leaves, while a delicate gold cord outlines the central mirror. Hang it in a salon, a bright entrance hall or a bedroom with tall ceilings, and it will fill the wall like a season in flower.

Primavera is handmade in Murano by Fratelli Tosi, a family glassworks founded in the early 1900s by Romano Tosi and known worldwide for its Venetian mirrors and Murano glass furniture.
