DESCRIPTION

Rosalba — Murano Glass Venetian Mirror

In the Venice of the early eighteenth century, the most sought-after portraitist in Europe was a woman: Rosalba Carriera. With sticks of pastel she gave her sitters a skin of powdered light, all blush and pearl, and when she travelled to Paris in 1720 the French court queued to be painted by her. Rosalba is a mirror in her palette: rose-tinted Murano glass, soft as pastel, lit from within.

Tinted mirror glass is one of the quiet luxuries of Venetian craft. A faint colour laid behind the glass changes everything the mirror returns, warming a face, softening a room, turning daylight into something closer to candlelight. In Rosalba that blush runs through the whole frame, so the mirror flatters before it reflects.

The frame is built from a crown of rose mirror panels, each engraved by hand with small flowers and fine rays, set between twisted cords of clear crystal. Crystal glass flowers are placed along the outline like a string of pearls, and a fan of glass leaves rises from the crest. At 100 cm tall it is sized for a dressing table, a powder room or the wall beside a bed, where a reflection is looked at closely.

Rosalba is handmade in Murano by Fratelli Tosi, a family glassworks founded in the early 1900s by Romano Tosi and known worldwide for its Venetian mirrors and Murano glass furniture.
