AUTHENTIC VENETIAN MURANO GLASS

Murano Glass Sailing Boats

Venice was a republic that lived entirely by sea for a thousand years, and the sail is still the shape the city thinks in. In glass it becomes something canvas never could be: transparent, curved as though full of wind, and lit from inside whenever the sun finds it.

The sail is the whole difficulty. It must be drawn out by hand into a single sheet, thin enough to glow, held in a convincing curve, and fused to the hull in the few seconds before the glass sets. On our giant boats — over half a metre, with mainsail and spinnaker — that takes a master and an assistant working in silence for most of a day. Very few are made each year.

From twenty-eight centimetres to museum scale, in clear glass or real gold leaf. Every piece arrives with a certificate of authenticity and fully insured worldwide shipping. Place one where the light comes from behind — that is when it stops being an ornament.

Buying guide

Murano Glass Sailing Boats

A Venetian subject

Boats are the one subject a Venetian glassmaker never has to imagine. The hull is drawn from the gather and the sails are pulled flat and thin while the glass is still soft, which is the difficult part: a sail must be even enough to hold the light and strong enough to survive cooling. Colour is worked in with sommerso layers or gold leaf, so the light passes through the sail rather than bouncing off it.

Where they look best

A glass boat needs light behind it more than any other sculpture — a window sill, a glass shelf, a lamp set low. Against a dark wall it reads as silhouette; with light behind it the sails come alive. They are a classic present for a retirement, a launch or an anniversary; other ideas are grouped by occasion in our gift guide.

Frequently asked questions

How fragile are the sails?

They are thinner than the hull and are the part to protect: lift the piece by the base, never by a sail, and keep it away from table edges. Dust with a soft brush rather than a cloth.

Is each boat unique?

Within its model, yes: the curve of the sail and the run of the colour are set by hand each time, so proportions vary slightly from the photograph.

Can I order a larger one?

Often yes — bigger versions are made to order. Tell us the size and colours you have in mind through custom commissions and we will confirm what is possible.
