Lighting

The Murano chandelier as we know it — arms of blown glass, each finished with hand-shaped flowers and leaves — dates to the 18th century, when Venetian glassmakers began combining lampworking (shaping glass over an open flame) with traditional furnace blowing to create fixtures rivalling anything in porcelain or gilt bronze. Our chandelier guide covers styles, sizes and how to choose one for your space.

Every fixture is assembled entirely by hand, arm by arm, glass leaf by glass leaf — which means dimensions, number of lights and even colour can often be adjusted to your ceiling height and room through our bespoke commissioning service. Once your chandelier arrives, our step-by-step mounting guide walks through safe installation from unboxing to first light.

Lighting a Room with Murano Glass

The whole family of light

Murano lighting is not only chandeliers. Chandeliers give a room its centre; wall sconces wash a corridor or flank a mirror; table lamps bring colour to a console or a bedside; floor lamps light a reading corner without touching the ceiling. All are mouth-blown and assembled by hand on the island, and all can be made in the colour you choose.

Layering, not flooding

A single bright fixture flattens a room. Venetian interiors work in layers: one central piece for the shape of the space, sconces at eye level for atmosphere, a lamp for the corner where people actually sit. Because every piece is made to order, the same colour of glass can run through all of them — ask us and we will have the workshop keep the pieces in one colour run.

Fittings, bulbs and installation

Our lighting is wired to European standards; if you are ordering from outside Europe, tell us your country before buying so we can confirm fittings and voltage together. LED bulbs are recommended — they run cool and protect the glass — in warm white around 2700 K. Ceiling pieces should be installed by an electrician; the mounting guide shows what the job involves.

Venetian chandelier or Murano chandelier?

The same light goes by both names. Venetian describes the city and the style — the curling arms, the glass flowers and leaves, the tiered Rezzonico silhouette named after the palace on the Grand Canal. Murano names the island where the Republic moved the furnaces in 1291 and where the arms are still blown one at a time.

The difference that matters is not the word but the making. On a real Venetian chandelier every arm is blown separately and no two curve identically; the colour is in the glass, not sprayed onto it; and the metal frame is hidden inside glass sleeves rather than left on show. See the full family in chandeliers, or the smaller fittings in wall sconces.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order a matching set for one room?

Yes. A chandelier with sconces or lamps in the same colour is one of the most common commissions: because the glass is blown to order, the workshop can keep them in a single colour run. Write to us with the room and we will prepare a proposal.

Will it work in my country?

Fixtures are supplied with European fittings as standard. Tell us where you are before ordering: for most models the fittings can be adapted, and where a local electrician needs to change them we say so clearly in advance.

Are the pieces dimmable?

The glass imposes no limit: dimming depends on the bulb and the dimmer. With dimmable LED bulbs and a compatible dimmer, Murano lighting dims beautifully — and low light is where the colour of the glass is at its best.

How long does a made-to-order piece take?

Weeks rather than days, because the glass is blown for your order. Each product page shows the estimated window for that model, and we confirm the date in writing when the order is placed.

Is a Venetian chandelier the same as a Murano chandelier?

Yes, when it is genuine. "Venetian chandelier" names the style that grew up in Venice; "Murano" names the island where that glass has legally been made since 1291. Pieces described as Venetian but produced elsewhere are copies of the style — the test is where each arm was blown, which is what a certificate of origin records.
