Aquarium — Murano Glass Sculpture
This is Murano showing off. A solid block of crystal, and inside it — suspended, impossibly — a shoal of coloured fish. The technique is called sommerso, "submerged": the fish are formed first, then drowned in layer after layer of clear molten glass until they float in the middle of a transparent stone.
It is one of the most difficult things the island makes. The glass must be built up slowly and evenly, because a single bubble or a cooling crack ruins weeks of work. Hold it to a window and the fish seem to move. Nineteen centimetres of pure Venetian showmanship.
